Why is there so much flippancy in the answering of serious questions?

I think the flippancy as you say is a defense mechanism from the constant judgement and condemnation by e.g. Christians on this forum against non-Christians. Also, people tend to be a lot more bold with their answers due to the anonymity of online forums such as this.
