Dry, itchy ears with brown crusty discharge?

My beagle-mix has very droopy ears which we clean regularly, but the ear cleaner seems to be drying out his ears too much. The brown discharge is not moist or waxy, but like a crusty build-up. The cleaner seems to be irritating to him. Is there anything else that can be used to clean them?
