Recovery from a psychotic break?

Can a person recover from a psychotic break to the point where they don't need medication? My doctor said that in a few years I may not need my medication. I'm not sure if he was just saying that to make me feel better. I have auditory hallucinations from dealing w/ a traumatic event.
