Muskets were muzzle loaded. that is you put the powder down the barrel first, then the bullet, then the wadding, and rammed them down with a ramrod. Early muskets were matchlocks, that is they were fired by using a piece of thick string soaked in brine, which was lit, and then placed in the matchlock, and when the trigger was squeezed the match would touch the powder in the pan, which fired the musket.
